assume

これまでの語とちがい、assume は微妙にわかりにくく、うまく使えないところがあるのではと思っていますが、いかがでしょうか。

assume「と想定する」明確な証拠はなくても憶測する
= to think or accept that sth is true but without having proofof it
が代表的なものですが、ほかにも派生して使われていますから、as-(...に)+-sume(の態度を)とる、、、の原義をしっかり理解しておくことが大切かと思います。


1  to think or accept that sth is true but without having proof of it
2  to take or begin to have power or responsibility
3  to begin to have a particular quality oe acceptance(=take on)
4  to pretend to have a particular feeling or quality(=put on)


I hope to go to college next year,assuming that I pass my exams. (1)
It is generally assumed that stress is caused by too much work. (1)
The court assumed responsibility for the girl`s welfare. (2)
This matter has assumed considerable importance. (3)
He assumed an air of concern. (4)
